Simi Motion

High-speed Firewire cameras

Commercial video cameras only record 50 (PAL) or 60 (NTSC) frames per second and for this reason they are not always the best choice for motion analysis in medical applications or in sports.

A wide variety of high-speed systems can be configured using Simi Motion in which the data captured by the cameras is recorded directly to hard-disk and is then available for further analysis. It is, of course, also possible to import video files which have been created previously.

Simi’s products support a wide variety of cameras, ranging from the simple webcam or DV camcorder for very simple applications to high-resolution high-speed cameras from various manufacturers for the most challenging application areas. We can deliver not only the software but also complete systems ready for immediate use for synchronous motion capture with several high-speed cameras.

High-speed camera configuration

Popular stationary systems supplied by Simi consist of 6-8 cameras with a speed of 200 Hz and a resolution of 640x480 pixels with a suitable computer. We can even supply systems with up to 24 cameras on one computer depending on the camera model and interface. If required, it is even possible to combine several computers to form a network.

Our mobile motion capture systems use notebooks which can process up to 2 cameras at 200 Hz and 640x480 pixels on one computer. We can also supply more powerful customized solutions with portable workstations.

One of our most powerful systems is the stationary capture system for up to 4 cameras at a rate of 500 Hz and a resolution of 1280x1024 pixels. Captured data are immediately available and do not have to be laboriously read out of the camera memory, which may be comparatively small. Since we are continually enhancing our products and are willing to accept a challenge, you are welcome to request an even more powerful system.

Almost all camera models are available in monochrome and color versions. Due to the better image quality, monochrome cameras are recommended for motion analysis. In order to cover as many application areas as possible, we support all the most common digital camera interfaces:

- FireWire (IEEE-1394a and 1394b)

- USB

- Gigabit Ethernet (GigE)

- CameraLink

The interface used depends on your application and on which cameras are suitable for it. We also offer solutions using almost any length of cables for all these interfaces.

In addition to the video data, the synchronous acquisition of analog data is possible. Application examples for this are audio data, force plates, distance measuring devices, EEG, EMG etc. Several hundred analog channels can be synchronously acquired, depending on the application.

If required, compression of the acquired video data can be carried out in real-time during capture using various methods. Normally this reduces the image quality, but by doing so valuable disk space can be saved. Depending on the technique used, for example, it is possible to retain high quality using as little disk space as possible or have a high compression speed without saving as much disk space. Especially for mobile systems, the latter option allows a larger number of cameras to be connected to a computer if required.

Our Sales Team will be happy to advise you about which requirements are suitable for your analysis system.

Unrivaled price range

Since the whole system is based on standardized components it is very favorably priced. A complete turnkey solution is therefore available at an economic price.
